Bosch spark plug is 115 years old

1. Bosch spark plug was invented in 1902 as a component of the ignition system from magneto high voltage
2. Today, Bosch produces hundreds of millions of candles per year in five enterprises
3. The range of Bosch has spark plugs for any type of engine, taking into account the requirements of automakers and the latest developments

The spark plug is one of the bright examples of how the auxiliary element of the ignition system has managed not only to survive the system itself, but also for more than a century has turned into one of the most sought-after products of Bosch. Today the company produces hundreds of millions of candles per year at five enterprises. Leading European, Asian and American manufacturers of vehicles and engines use Bosch spark plugs as an original equipment for their products.  Not only cars are equipped Bosch spark plugs, but also motorcycles, boat motors, equipment for horticulture and forestry, stationary gas engines, water pumps and emergency generators. The company's products help win car races around the world, from amateur competitions to the most prestigious racing series.

And it all began in the summer of 1901, when Robert Bosch instructed the head of the development department of his company Gottlob Honold to develop an ignition system from magneto with a long spark. Although the very design of the candle was known back in the 1860s and even tested for the Carl Benz petrol engine, the results of the experiment were unsatisfactory. In Bosch's portfiel already was an invention of  ignition systema from magneto, so a few months later, Honold introduced the project of a spark plug connected to high voltage magneto. This innovation ensured the guaranteed ignition of the fuel-air mixture in internal combustion engines and became a real breakthrough in the automotive industry. At the beginning of 1902, Bosch received a patent for its invention and launched it into batch production.

Bosch ignition systems helped pave the way for motorization in Europe. Before the outbreak of the First World War, the Bosch ignition system was already actively used in cars, gaining a leading position in the market. Thanks to the introduction of conveyor production, millions of these systems were manufactured in compliance with high quality standards.

Today, more than 100 years later, spark plugs are still one of the company's main competencies. The only thing that remained unchanged is the very principle of ignition: like 115 years ago, an electric spark ignites an air-fuel mixture and ensures the operation of a gasoline engine. For the time from the moment of invention the construction of the candle itself has not undergone any significant changes, the improvement has gone towards to the use of more durable and resistant materials. For example, a nickel coating that can withstand the temperature and chemical effects. The range of Bosch has spark plugs for any engine, taking into account the requirements of automakers and the company's latest developments - with a central electrode doped with yttrium; with electrodes with platinum insert; with an alloy of platinum with iridium; with silver coating. The number of side electrodes in Bosch spark plugs varies from 1 to 4, and the minimum diameter of the central electrode reaches 0.6 mm.

As the leading manufacturer of components for the initial equipment of cars, today Bosch produces spark plugs that perfectly meet the requirements of all types of engines. Most automakers of the world trust the company to develop ignition systems for new models. Bosch also participates in the production of high-performance, economical and environmentally friendly engines in both the automotive segment and special applications.
