Bosch's modern proposal for spark plugs
- Relying on his own experience, Bosch develops both candles of classic design and high-performance candles using precious materials.
- The technologies developed by Bosch can significantly improve the reliability and performance of spark plugs.
- Bosch spark plug production experience over many years allows us to offer consumers better quality products.
In 1902, Bosch for the first time introduced a car ignition system with a candle connected to a high-voltage magneto. Today, Bosch provides coverage for more than 90% of the fleet. The volume of production of these products is hundreds of millions per year. Production is organized in five enterprises in different countries. Bosch spark plugs are equipped with not only serial, but also racing cars. The company's products help win car races around the world, ranging from amateur competitions and ending with the most prestigious formula series. Leading vehicle manufacturers use Bosch spark plugs as original products.
New technologies and materials
Modern engines operate at particularly high temperatures in combustion chambers, and spark plugs are under extremely high loads. Electrodes are subject to greater wear, and service intervals are extended, which must be compensated by the use of more heat-resistant materials. Today Bosch spark plugs use platinum, titanium, iridium and silver alloys.
Thanks to the use of noble and rare earth metals, the operational characteristics change significantly. So, for high-tech candles Bosch is characterized by high resistance to corrosion and spark erosion. This allows you to significantly increase the replacement interval, which can exceed 100 thousand km, and apply other innovative solutions.
Candles for direct injection systems
One of the Bosch progressive solutions dictated by the features of the direct injection system is the directional side electrode. Reliable ignition of the mixture in the combustion chamber is achieved due to the precise qualities of the spark plugs with a directional side electrode, the gap of which is regulated even at the factory. Depending on the type of engine, the mounting angle of the electrodes and their position in the combustion chamber are determined. Strictest manufacturing tolerances, modern measuring equipment and, of course, close cooperation with the automotive industry ensure the optimum position of the side electrode.
Modern range of Bosch spark plugs
Bosch produces spark plugs for all engines, taking into account the requirements of automakers and the latest developments of the company.
Candles standard range Bosch have the advantage of maximum versatility. The copper core is enclosed in a wear-resistant corrosion-resistant nickel-chrome sheath. Standard Bosch spark plugs meet the requirements of the factory configuration and allow you to get high engine performance in all operating conditions.
Bosch spark plugs with yttrium have high reliability. An alloy with this rare earth metal improves ignition reliability and durability of candles.
Bosch noble metal spark plugs provide first-class performance and at the same time have high reliability. Platinum has the lowest electrical and thermal conductivity, as well as the smallest thermal expansion of all noble metals. In addition, it is highly resistant to corrosion, so Bosch platinum spark plugs have a very long service life. The technology of double platinum, when this noble metal is used both in the central and in the side electrode, further enhances the service life of the candle.
The line of candles Bosch Super 4, designed for the old fleet, improves engine performance by four thin side electrodes instead of one. High-performance candles with a powerful discharge allow you to achieve higher combustion characteristics of the mixture, which contributes to increasing the efficiency of each stroke. In addition, the construction of 4 side electrodes from a chromium-nickel alloy with a copper core increases the reliability of the spark plugs and reduces the likelihood of misfiring, since the wear is evenly distributed between the electrodes.
The candles of the Bosch Silver and Silver Plus range are designed for demanding operating conditions and high thermal loads characteristic of motor sports. Thanks to the central electrode made of solid silver, the candles acquire increased temperature properties and excellent resistance to chemical attack.
Spark plugs with new type terminal connection
In Bosch spark plugs with a terminal connection of a new type, the terminal is not in the form of a tip and a nut like SAE, but in the form of a “bowl”. This design allowed the insulator to be lengthened by about 8 mm, while maintaining the same length of the spark plug itself. Due to the elongated insulator, the resistance of the spark to breakdown on the outer part of the insulator is improved, which ensures reliable ignition even with increasing maximum pressure in the cylinders. This design of the candle allowed to increase the breakdown voltage from 24 kV to 31 kV.
Pin to Pin Spark Plugs
This type of candle is characterized by the presence of additional “needle contacts” made of platinum-iridium alloy on the central and side electrodes (with a diameter of 0.8 and 0.6 mm). and also ensure confident ignition of the lean mixture in engines with direct fuel injection.
Spark plugs for engines converted to gas fuel
For cars with an engine converted to gas fuel, special spark plugs are required that meet the modified operating conditions of the engines on a new type of fuel. Gas engines require candles that have specific characteristics, primarily of higher breakdown voltage. In addition, higher temperatures occur in the combustion chambers when using gas. These factors lead to faster electrode wear. Bosch platinum-iridium plugs are the best choice for engines converted to gas fuel. These candles are characterized by high wear resistance and resistance to chemical attack, and their use allows you to compensate for changing conditions without resorting to reducing the replacement interval.
High-tech component that requires a professional approach
Many car owners forget that incorrect selection and installation of spark plugs adversely affect engine power, fuel consumption, engine start-up efficiency, exhaust emissions and may even lead to the failure of ignition system components. Therefore, when choosing candles, it is important to use only the original manufacturers catalogs and follow the recommendations for selecting components for a particular engine.
Given the complexity of modern engines and individual components, Bosch strongly recommends replacing candles at professional service stations. Errors made during self-replacement can lead to breakage of the insulator of the spark plug and deformation of the body, as well as damage to the thread on the candle itself and in the spark plug wells of the cylinder head, which will require expensive repairs.
